Robert Walker began his career as a
portrait photographer at Lorstan Studios in Wilmington,
DE, where he applied his artistry to capturing the essence
of personalities from local families to heads of state.
As his reputation grew, he was recruited into photojournalism
at the News Journal Newspapers in Wilmington. He next
moved to the Chicago Tribune where he held a staff photographer
position, covering historic events ranging from the
Democratic Convention riots to the Beatles’ first
appearance on U.S. soil. He subsequently joined the
staff of Fredericksburg, VA Free-Lance Star and, finally,
was named photo editor for the Washington Star in DC.
Over the years, Mr. Walker’s uncanny ability to
capture the human ethos during breaking news events
gained him a national reputation and numerous national
and state press awards.
Throughout his career, he has taken
spectacular photos, such as the incredible images of
a mid-air collision between two airplanes at The National
Air Races, which won him Press Association “Picture
of the Year,” in addition to top honors in many
other competitions. His work has been featured in such
publications as Time, Life, Pro Football Weekly, Sporting
News and others. Mr. Walker’s photos of famous
artist Andrew Wyeth appeared in Time Magazine, which
developed into a personal friendship with the artist
who was pleased with his work…one artist to another.
His dramatic photos of stark landscapes
and vistas of Virginia were displayed in a show at the
Fredericksburg Gallery of Modern Art, causing one reviewer
to write, “Mr. Walker’s work is reminiscent
of noted 1930s and 1940s painters Charles Scheeler and
Edward Hopper, whose work elevated art to the heights
of drama and realism.”
